Liverpool chose not to sign Stoke City’s number two goalkeeper Jack Butland during the domestic transfer window, according to reports.
Butland not on Klopp’s radar
The 27-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the past few days following their unexpected 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa, when second-choice goalkeeper Adrian came under intense scrutiny from the Kop faithful.
With Alisson Becker sidelined for six weeks after picking up a shoulder injury in training, the Brazilian is now ruled out for tomorrow’s Merseyside derby against Everton, as well as Premier League games against Sheffield United and West Ham, as per Independent.
Butland, who has picked up nine England caps since 2012, has found himself out of favour at the bet365 Stadium at the expense of Adam Davies, who has leapfrogged him to become Michael O’Neill’s first choice in Staffordshire.
Should Liverpool replace Adrian with Jack Butland?
There are better keepers out there...
Despite being urged to go for the likes of Watford’s Ben Foster and Brentford’s David Raya, it appears that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is happy with his goalkeeping options as the Liverpool Echo reported that they have ‘zero interest’ in taking the former England international to Merseyside.
It is a huge call to make from the manager, particularly due to the level of criticism that Adrian has received in recent weeks.
Considering the wretched recent history Liverpool have when it comes to goalkeepers, it was presumed that Klopp may have wanted to stitch up the previous wounds that have cost him the Champions League and precious points in the league.
That being said, the Reds had the best defence in the Premier League last season which helped them capture their first title in 30 years, which could counter this argument and justify his thought process.
Only the next five games will tell us whether this was a good, intelligent move for Klopp to make, or whether it was a costly error that may scupper their title defence long before the end of the season.
