Liverpool have reportedly 'asked for information' regarding Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Zakaria linked with Reds move

The Reds could do with midfield reinforcements come the end of the season, with the likes of Thiago, Jordan Henderson and James Milner all now in their 30s.

Zakaria is one player who has been tipped to join Liverpool recently, having become a key presence for both Monchengladbach and Switzerland.

The 25-year-old has started 11 Bundesliga games so far this season but his current deal expires next summer.

The Latest: Romano gives fresh Zakaria update

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Romano confirmed that there was interest in Zakaria from Liverpool, although Bayern Munich are also in pursuit of the Swiss midfielder. Juventus and Barcelona are mentioned as potential suitors as well in what is described as an 'open' race for his signature.

The journalist tweeted: "Denis Zakaria has received many approaches in the last weeks, out of contract in 2022. He recently changed his agent - Bayern have joined the race, also Liverpool asked for information since he’s with Hasan Cetinkaya. Juventus and Barça still interested. Open race."

The Verdict: Perfect long-term option

Zakaria looks a very strong option to come in and bolster Liverpool's midfield, with the Swiss beast compared to multiple Champions League winner Toni Kroos by German legend Lothar Matthaus.

The Monchengladbach midfielder has averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game in the Bundesliga this season, with the former figure notably more than Reds enforcer Fabinho in the Premier League (1.4).

At 25, Zakaria is someone who might come in as a squad player initially but gradually usurp the likes of Thiago and Henderson as they drift past their prime.
