Former Premier League defender Danny Mills believes that Georginio Wijnaldum will end his five-year stay at Anfield at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
The future of the 29-year-old has been up in the air for some time with his current contract due to expire in the summer.
Mundo Deportivo recently reported that Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is upbeat about capturing his compatriot, while Sky Sports have negotiating have hit a stalemate but a deal has not been rejected at this time.
Ex-Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is confident that manager Jurgen Klopp will keep his man and hand him a blockbuster deal.
Speaking to Football Insider, Mills disagrees with him and believes that the Dutchman will leave at the end of the season.
“He’s got until the end of the season on his current contract,” he said.
“The player is now free to sign a pre-contract with somebody else. He’s obviously a very, very good player but nobody stays in one place forever.
“Football is very transient and you’re always looking to renew, refresh. That’s what Manchester United did in their prime. They would always move players on and bring players in and add a little bit of freshness. That might be the case here.
“Also if you’re Gini Wijnaldum and you have the chance to go to Barcelona, it’s very, very difficult to turn that down. To play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, if that opportunity comes along, it’s quite difficult to turn that down.
“If he’s going there on a free transfer, it’s almost done and dusted you can’t blame him for wanting to try that.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
It will be a huge blow for Liverpool if they were to lose Wijnaldum. The Holland international has played an instrumental part in their recent success, winning both the Champions League and Premier League in the space of 13 months.
If reports are correct, the ball appears to be in Wijnaldum’s court and Liverpool have all they can. Time will tell.
