Any interest that Liverpool still have in Real Betis defender Aissa Mandi is nothing more “than a hangover”, according to reports in Spain.
Mandi misses Anfield move
The Reds sold Dejan Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg in the summer for £10.9m and manager Jurgen Klopp eventually chose not to replace him, keeping faith in the centre-backs that he already has, plus a couple of youngsters.
But Liverpool have been struck with a major injury crisis, with first-choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out due to long-term knee injuries, with Joel Matip as their only established defender available for selection.
Klopp’s team were linked with a move for Mandi in the summer, but a move did not materialise and details have emerged as to why that was, as reports claim the Anfield outfit ‘never took the final step’.
According to Estadio Deportivo (via Sport Witness), any reports of Liverpool going back in for the 29-year-old Algerian are ‘no more than a hangover’, despite having ‘showed a lot of interest’ in the summer.
They did add though that the negotiations that took place meant they have ‘part of the job done’, but there were no specifics as to exactly what the ‘final step’ not taken in the summer was.
Transfer Tavern take
In reality, it looks like Mandi could be using this to strike a better deal with his current club. With The Athletic suggesting that the Reds are unlikely to sign a defender, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Mandi didn’t move to Anfield.
Liverpool could be in danger of ruling themselves out of the title race before it has even begun if they get any more serious injuries to the likes of Matip though, so perhaps they should reconsider and sign a proper replacement for Lovren, who provided depth if nothing else.
