Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Red Chris Kirkland has tipped Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri to leave Anfield after Jurgen Klopp’s exit hint – going on to say he ‘will probably go’.
Shaqiri, who has found game time difficult to come by on Merseyside overall, despite working his way back into contention in some matches, could still depart Merseyside in an effort to become a more regular starter – having ‘suffered’ from injuries combined with a lack of starts.
Should Liverpool let go of Shaqiri?
Yes, time for him to move on
No, exceptional back up option
Shaqiri tipped for Anfield departure
Adored by sections of supporters for his heroic displays against the likes of Man United and Barcelona in recent seasons, Shaqiri has been described as a ‘powerhouse‘ – with teammate Andrew Robertson lauding his ‘phenomenal‘ teammate.
Kirkland, speaking to The Transfer Tavern, desperately wants the Switzerland international to stay at Anfield under Klopp but concedes he is more than likely to part company due to the quality in front of him.
“Shaqiri will probably go at the end of the season,” explained the former Anfield shot-stopper.
“Is he ever gonna get a starting position Liverpool? I’d say no, no, definitely not.
“I think there’s too much quality there. Listen, he’s a top player don’t get me wrong. Great to have in the squad, like we’ve seen what he’s doing now.
“He has suffered with injuries. That’s knocked the stuffing out of him. But I’d really love him to stay because I think he’s got a big part to play.”
Transfer Tavern take
While both Kirkland, and arguably a large section of Liverpool fans, would like Shaqiri to stay at Anfield – it may be best for him to leave as he seeks guaranteed starting time.
One thing is for certain, whether the 29-year-old departs or not next summer, he will be fondly remembered as a cult hero.
