Matip on Nou Camp radar
The 29-year-old has been lauded as one of Jurgen Klopp “best signings”, coming from the German tactician himself as he has been delighted with him since his free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke in 2016, one of his first major swoops as manager.
During that timeframe, Matip has scored five goals and provided one assist in 114 appearances (TransferMarkt), providing a helping hand in winning the Champions League and the Premier League in the space of 13 months.
Will Liverpool sign a defender in January?
This is despite Liverpool’s desperate injury crisis, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both sidelined due to serious knee injuries, leaving Matip as Klopp’s only established centre half available for selection.
Transfer Tavern take
This is really bad timing for the Merseysiders and will be a scenario that Klopp could really do without. Youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have been given first-team roles at the expense of their absentees, however, Liverpool shouldn’t rely on the duo long term due to the immense pressure at the club to perform.
If Liverpool did lose Matip in January, it would be disastrous. The Reds have to ensure that they can retain all of their key assets, especially in defence, if they want to stand a chance in retaining their elusive Premier League crown.
Due to Matip struggling with his own fitness issues, Klopp must strengthen by dipping into the transfer window himself in January to bolster their backline but it’s hard to find any realistic scenario where he’d allow Matip to leave in January.
