Liverpool are still interested in signing the young Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, according to reports.
Mendes interest remains
Mendes has been labelled as the “best U19 left-back in Europe” by Sporting president Frederico Varandas, with Manchester United also interested in his services (via Daily Mail).
However, with new contract talks stalling with the Liga NOS side, Liverpool could take full advantage of the situation. According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via TEAMTalk), Liverpool are still interested in bringing the youngster to Anfield as they look to bolster their defensive assets.
The report added that the Reds could withdraw their interest if Sporting hike up the price for Mendes, taking into account the Anfield club’s current injury predicament that Verde e Brancos could look to expose.
The Merseysiders are currently going through a catastrophic injury crisis, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold amongst the host of ruled out (via the Mirror).
Transfer Tavern Verdict
On paper, this is a deal that makes sense. However, it could end up making the signing of Tsimkas look completely pointless and make it look like money that has been squandered.
On the other hand, Klopp needs reinforcements and also needs to look to the future. Mendes can play at centre-half as well as left-back and the German tactician loves a versatile player.
