Liverpool have suffered a blow in their quest to sign Florian Neuhaus, with a reliable journalist confirming that he is staying at Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Lowdown: Liverpool keen on Neuhaus

Gini Wijnaldum's departure to Paris Saint-Germain has arguably heightened the need for the Reds to sign a new central midfielder this summer.

Neuhaus has been constantly linked with a move to Anfield, having impressed for Monchengladbach last season, scoring six goals and registering five assists in the Bundesliga.

The Latest: Midfielder will stay put

Liverpool's hopes of signing the Germany international look over for the time being, however, with SPORT1 journalist Florian Plettenberg taking to Twitter to confirm that he will stay put this summer.

He does mention that a potential move could materialise at the end of this season, though, tipping Bayern Munich and Liverpool to play 'poker' over a deal.

The Verdict: Blow for the Reds

Neuhaus is an excellent midfielder - he has been hailed as 'extraordinary' by former Monchengladbach manager Marco Rose - so it is a blow for Liverpool to miss out on signing him this summer.

The hope is that he becomes available next year, however, at a point when fresh blood may be needed in the middle of the park, considering Jordan Henderson and Thiago are now both in their 30s.

Of course, that won't help the fans who are desperate for additional depth in midfield after the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum.
