Liverpool: Paul Robinson confused as to why Jurgen Klopp is not pursuing new goalkeeper - Liverpool Transfer Rumours

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson is flummoxed as to why Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has not entered the market to sign a goalkeeper.

Robinson questions Klopp

This comes after the Reds’ dismal 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa before the international break, when their second-choice shot-stopper Adrian made a series of errors which contributed to their downfall.

Alisson Becker has been ruled out early in the season for Liverpool’s second successive campaign after picking up a shoulder injury in training. He also limped off during their opening league match against Norwich last year at the outset of their title-winning season.

With this in mind, reports believe that the German tactician has been looking to bring in Stoke City’s Jack Butland, the former England international who has found himself out of Michael O’Neill’s favour at the bet365 Stadium. Free agent Danijel Subasic, who was recently released by Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, has also been mentioned.

Despite these rumours, Robinson cannot understand why they have waited this long to get their goalkeeping dilemma sorted ahead of Saturday’s derby against league leaders Everton.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “It is a huge game to chuck an inexperienced goalkeeper in. Leaving a goalkeeper of Adrian’s experience out for such a huge game is a big decision and is one that Klopp has to make.

“I personally think that he sticks with Adrian and gives him another opportunity.

“I am surprised that they have not already signed another goalkeeper knowing that Alisson will be out for 5 to 6 weeks.

“Adrian is having a wobble, he is not playing well and the only other fit goalkeeper is inexperienced so I just cannot understand why he has not addressed the situation yet.

“Liverpool have had the whole international break. It was the perfect opportunity.”

Dicing with danger

Klopp will surely have a plan in mind to improve his goalkeeping options. Over the years, Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards have been a formidable duo who have performed miracles in the transfer market. However, not addressing the issue could mean that their title defence could quickly become complicated, especially with Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton starting the season so well.

Liverpool have a poor reputation when it comes to second-choice goalkeepers – Loris Karius and Charles Itandje are a couple of names that spring to mind.

With the relentless team that Klopp has built over the course of his time at Anfield, he cannot risk undoing much of that good work by failing to adequately address the goalkeeping situation.
