# Liverpool: Herbie Kane could be sold in January as club change their stance on him

**Liverpool are reportedly willing to listen to any offers for young midfielder Herbie Kane in January, which would mark a volte-face by the club in their opinion of the player.**

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-liverpool-to-listen-to-january-offers-for-midfielder-after-u-turn/) reported on Monday that the Anfield club would be open to interest in the 20-year-old, with some sources from within Liverpool doubting his ability to progress into the first team long-term.

That report comes less than two months after [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool-pull-plug-on-rising-stars-exit-as-they-plan-first-team-role-for-him/) claimed that the Reds were planning to integrate him into the first team this season and would not countenance any possible transfer for the player, with the same publication citing [Rangers](https://www.footballinsider247.com/ibrox-exclusive-rangers-make-approach-to-sign-goalscoring-liverpool-central-midfielder/), [Swansea and Hull](https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool-pull-plug-on-rising-stars-exit-as-they-plan-first-team-role-for-him/) as interested parties.

Kane was given his first-team debut at Liverpool in last month’s Carabao Cup win over MK Dons, when he came on as a substitute for the final eight minutes. \[[via TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/herbie-kane/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314253/verein/31)\]

However, fellow Anfield youngsters Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Ki-Jana Hoever and Caoimhin Kelleher [all started that game](https://www.skysports.com/football/mk-dons-vs-liverpool/teams/420330), while Kane has made only [three appearances in Premier League 2](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/herbie-kane/leistungsdaten/spieler/314253) for the Reds’ under-23 team so far this season.

He had a decent loan spell at Doncaster in League One last term, scoring [seven goals in 49 appearances in all competitions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/herbie-kane/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314253) in a box-to-box midfield role. However, those figures are skewed by [three of the goals coming against non-league Chorley](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/herbie-kane/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314253/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/FAC/verein/2454) in the FA Cup.

Also, while Jurgen Klopp brought a host of young players such as Daniel Atherton, Sepp van den Berg, Yasser Larouci, Adam Lewis, Hoever, Jones and Brewster on the first team’s pre-season tour of USA in July, Kane stayed put on Merseyside. \[[via This Is Anfield](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2019/07/liverpool-confirm-28-man-squad-for-pre-season-tour-of-the-us/)\]

Such is the competition for places in Liverpool’s midfield that experienced England internationals such as [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alex-oxlade-chamberlain/profil/spieler/143424) and [Adam Lallana](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-lallana/profil/spieler/43530) have struggled for gametime this season, playing for just [334 and 111 minutes respectively in the Reds’ 13 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/leistungsdaten/verein/31) in all competitions.

Kane scored only [four goals in 40 League One games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/herbie-kane/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314253/verein/2454) for Doncaster last season, which doesn’t suggest that he’ll make any great impact at top-flight level with Liverpool.

Also, with other youngsters at the club getting more senior recognition than him, right now it seems hard to imagine the 20-year-old establishing himself at Anfield, so it’s understandable why the Reds’ hierarchy now see him as dispensable if the right offer comes in.
