# Liverpool: Joe Gomez now expected to sign new Reds deal, talks ongoing

**[Liverpool](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/) defender Joe Gomez is expected to sign a new deal at Anfield this summer in a twist from previous reports suggesting he would push to leave.**

### The Lowdown: Gomez struggles for minutes

The Englishman has endured a frustrating season after returning from injury, failing to become a regular part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

In fact, Gomez only ended up making [four starts](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/136451/Show/Joe-Gomez) in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) throughout the whole of 2021/22, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate preferred at centre-back.

The 25-year-old has been [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/aston-villa-news/aston-villa-gerrard-eyeing-up-swoop-for-joe-gomez/) with a move to Villa at the end of the season, and [90min](https://www.90min.com/posts/joe-gomez-to-push-for-liverpool-exit-in-the-summer) even reported he would actually push for an exit to get a crack at Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

### The Latest: Key twist emerges

According to [*The Telegraph*](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/05/22/inside-aston-villas-transfer-war-room-steven-gerrard-prepares/)‘s John Percy, Steven Gerrard does indeed want Gomez at Villa but the defender is likely to sign a new deal with the Reds instead.

His current contract doesn’t [run out](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/profil/spieler/256178) until the summer of 2024 but Klopp is seemingly keen on nailing down his future beyond that date.

Talks have been opened already about a new deal.

### The Verdict: Ideal squad player

This is great news from a Liverpool perspective, with Gomez such a good option at both centre-back and right-back, having been [hailed](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/385277-jurgen-klopp-praise-for-joe-gomez) as ‘sensational’ by Klopp in the past.

If he had wanted to leave, it would have been hard to begrudge him a summer move, but it appears as though he is happy with his current status as a squad player.

At 25, he still has years ahead of him, and with Van Dijk and Matip turning 31 this summer, he may end up partnering Konate regularly one day.
