# Liverpool: Journalist does not expect much transfer activity in January

**Liverpool are not expected to be very active in the January transfer window, according to a journalist from a local media outlet.**

In a column for the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-salah-robertson-17259447), Sean Bradbury said that it currently seems unlikely that Liverpool will conduct much business in January, although he wrote that there is the possibility of a couple of players being sought to “bed them in” for next season.

Bradbury wrote in the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-salah-robertson-17259447) that Jurgen Klopp’s “settled squad is performing at the peak of its substantial powers”, adding that “the Reds would be shopping in a very exclusive market to sign anyone of sufficient quality to challenge the current roster”.

Liverpool are facing an intense period of [14 matches in the space of 45 days in five different competitions](https://talksport.com/football/622984/liverpool-fixture-schedule-jurgen-klopp-carabao-cup-club-world-cup/), a hectic schedule that could severely test the depth and fitness of Klopp’s first-team squad.

The Reds will face the extraordinary situation of fielding two separate squads in less than 24 hours for a Carabao Cup trip to Aston Villa on December 17th and the Club World Cup semi-finals in Qatar a day later. \[[via talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/625652/liverpool-carabao-cup-quarter-final-aston-villa-december-17/)\]

Injury problems already seem to be mounting for Liverpool, with [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11860813/mohamed-salah-liverpool-forwards-return-date-unclear-after-ankle-injury) reporting that Mohamed Salah’s return date from an ankle problem is unclear. [A similar injury](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-salah-robertson-17259447) saw Andrew Robertson [pull out of Scotland’s squad](https://www.bbc.com/sport/scotland/50389854) this week, with journalist James Pearce tweeting ([via @JamesPearceLFC](https://twitter.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/1194214408513359872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1194214408513359872&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.footballtransfertavern.com%2Fpremier-league%2Fliverpool%2Fliverpool-fans-react-nonchalantly-to-injury-update-on-andrew-robertson%2F)) that he could be doubtful for the trip to Crystal Palace on November 23rd.

The Reds have already been without [Joel Matip](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/leistungsdaten/spieler/82105) and [Xherdan Shaqiri](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/leistungsdaten/spieler/86792) in recent games [due to injury](https://www.premierinjuries.com/injury-table.php), while Naby Keita [limped out of the recent Carabao Cup game against Arsenal](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/371512-injury-update-aston-villa-matip-keita) having been [sidelined by a muscle injury](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/naby-keita/verletzungen/spieler/302215) earlier in the season.

The prospect of being without Salah and Robertson for an extended period is frightening, with only [Sadio Mane scoring more than the Egyptian](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/leistungsdaten/verein/31) this term and [no natural left-back alternative](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/kadernachposition/verein/31) for the Scot – midfielder James Milner has [deputised in that role](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-milner/leistungsdaten/spieler/3333) on occasion recently.

Liverpool kept a low profile in the summer transfer window, only bringing in teenagers [Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transfers/verein/31) along with experienced goalkeepers [Adrian](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adrian/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/71271) and [Andy Lonergan](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/360357-andy-lonergan-liverpool-signing-contract-jurgen-klopp).

As Bradbury has suggested, Klopp may adopt an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach, with the Reds [eight points clear](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=210&ha=-1) at the top of the Premier League having [dropped only two points in 12 games](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=210&ha=-1).

However, they have exploited the January window very effectively in previous years, signing the likes of [Luis Suarez](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/9377256.stm) ([82 goals in 133 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-suarez/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/44352)), [Daniel Sturridge](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/jan/02/liverpool-chelsea-striker-daniel-sturridge?CMP=twt_gu) ([68 goals in 160 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/daniel-sturridge/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/47082)), [Philippe Coutinho](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/21266402) ([54 goals in 201 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444)) and [Virgil van Dijk](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42496637) (reigning [PFA Player of the Year](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48065752)) mid-season.

Depending on how the squad negotiates the glut of games for the remainder of 2019, Liverpool may be left with no option but to strengthen in January – and the planning for that should start now so that they’re not left scrambling for players towards the end of the window.
