Liverpool: FSG ‘unlikely’ to pay asking price for Jude Bellingham

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are ‘unlikely’ to pay the £100m asking price to sign Jude Bellingham in 2023, according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey.

The Lowdown: Five-horse race

The midfielder is one of the most sought-after talents in world football right now, and despite still having three years remaining on his contract at Signal Iduna Park, has caught the eye of several potential suitors.

Premier League clubs Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea, alongside the Reds, have all been credited with a strong interest in the 19-year-old, although it’s believed that Real Madrid are currently leading the race.

The Latest: Bailey’s comments

Speaking to TEAMtalk, Bailey revealed that Liverpool’s hopes of landing Bellingham next year are now slim, with Dortmund having increased their valuation for the player.

The journalist said: “As it stands, Bellingham has not made his decision and sources close to the player are indicating he will not decide until after the World Cup finals.”

“Borussia Dortmund are confident he will stay with them for at least another season at least until 2024. But others believe he will be tempted by a move at the end of the season. What we can say is that he won’t be leaving in January.

Latest Liverpool transfer news!

“Liverpool have long been linked and they love him. But he is going to cost well in excess of £100m…and it remains to be seen if Liverpool owners Fenway Sports will go to that level. I am told that is very unlikely.

“The one club in pole position for Bellingham and the money to do it is Real Madrid. But Bellingham’s next club will be decided by him – he will make the decision, so that does give Liverpool some hope. But as said Bellingham, is one for next summer.”

The Verdict: Henderson heir?

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson isn’t getting any younger at 32, and with Bellingham holding similar leadership qualities having already captained Dortmund, he could be the former’s long-term successor.

The Stourbridge-born talent also holds a creative spark, having already made 11 goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

The Reds paying more than £100m for a player who is still developing in his career is excessive, but if they are able to cash in on some soon-to-be out-of-contract players in the New Year, the funds to pull it off could no doubt be generated.
