# Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp could turn to Philippe Coutinho if Kai Havertz cannot be signed

**Philippe Coutinho could be in line for a shock return to Liverpool if the [Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1239850/Liverpool-Kai-Havertz-Jurgen-Klopp-transfer-wish-list) is to be believed.**

As things stand, according to the outlet, Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz is the club’s main target for the summer. However, should a move fail to materialise, Jurgen Klopp could turn to his former player.

Coutinho, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, could be sold in the summer by parent club Barcelona for [£77m](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1239850/Liverpool-Kai-Havertz-Jurgen-Klopp-transfer-wish-list), with Anfield seemingly a possible destination. Given the 27-year-old’s [sour exit](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/lemar-brandt-fekir-coutinho-liverpool-16293718) back in 2018, you could not blame any Liverpool fan for opposing such a transfer.

However, looking at things objectively, surely this would be a good signing if the club cannot land Havertz? He has had his [struggles at Barcelona](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2019/06/10/5cfe8d3fe2704e032f8b459a.html), but under Klopp he truly excelled.

In his final Premier League campaign, Coutinho scored seven goals, provided six assists and averaged [just under three key passes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/History/Philippe-Coutinho) per game (via WhoScored). From 14 games, those are spectacular numbers, with the latter more than what [any Liverpool player](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/26/Show/England-Liverpool) is currently averaging this season.

Capable of playing in a deep midfield role (as highlighted by [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-au/news/philippe-coutinho-from-playmaker-to-unplayable-in-five-years/k9dcxtk4eiek103cypegyamiz)), the Brazil international is the sort of player who could make something happen for Klopp’s side when Mohamed Salah, Saido Mane and Roberto Firmino are struggling against a deep block — although that has been a rarity this season.

Nevertheless, the potential signing of Coutinho, who could also be deployed further forward, does not sound like a bad shout given his track record in English football’s top flight.
