# Liverpool: Paul Glatzel in talks with club over new contract

**Liverpool are hoping to tie down the future of young striker Paul Glatzel after entering contract talks with the 18-year-old.**

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-liverpool-open-talks-to-agree-centre-forward-new-deal/) reported that the Reds have opened discussions with the teenager about a potential new deal at the club, who only signed his first professional contract seven months ago.

According to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-liverpool-open-talks-to-agree-centre-forward-new-deal/), Liverpool envision a bright future for Glatzel and view him as a possible first-team star in future years.

The 18-year-old was very prolific for Liverpool’s youth and reserve teams last season, along with fellow striker Bobby Duncan, who this week [completed a move to Fiorentina](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49549403).

Glatzel scored [21 goals in 30 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paul-glatzel/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/470604) for the Reds’ youth and reserve sides in 2018/19 (0.7 goals per game), including [11 goals in 15 matches in the Under-18 Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paul-glatzel/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/470604) and [eight goals in six games on Liverpool’s triumphant FA Youth Cup journey](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paul-glatzel/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/470604/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/FAYC/verein/6922).

He featured for Jurgen Klopp’s first team in their opening pre-season friendly in July, a 6-0 win over Tranmere, but sadly picked up a cruciate knee ligament injury in the game at Prenton Park. \[[via Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-tranmere-match-transfer-news-16572339)\]

The [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-starlet-paul-glatzel-undergoes-16645618) reported that he subsequently underwent knee surgery and is likely to miss the majority of the 2019/20 season.

Last month, Klopp expressed words of commendation for Glatzel, telling the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-injury-news-alisson-update-15252819) that he thought the youngster is “[a wonderful kid, a wonderful player](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-injury-news-alisson-update-15252819)” and indicating that he could feature in the first team once he recovers full fitness.

Duncan scored [25 goals in 36 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bobby-duncan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401543) for Liverpool’s youth and reserve teams last season (0.69 goals per game) and [netted in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City](https://www.thefa.com/news/2019/apr/25/fa-youth-cup-final-report-manchester-city-liverpool-250419).

However, the striker expressed concerns over his prospects of establishing himself in the first team at Anfield, as reported by the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7236721/Jurgen-Klopp-Bobby-Duncan-pre-season-chance-Liverpool.html), and had been hoping to leave the club, according to his agent Saif Rubie, who accused Liverpool of forcing him to remain at Anfield against his own will, as reported by [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/28/liverpool-bobby-duncan-deny-mentally-bullying-agent).

Neither [Glatzel](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/paul-glatzel/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/470604) nor [Duncan](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bobby-duncan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401543) have played for Liverpool’s first team in a competitive game, while the former had a marginally better scoring record at youth and reserve team level last season.

With Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane making [150 appearances between them in 2018/19](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/0?reldata=%262018) and [playing every league game so far this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/0?reldata=GB1%262019), [Champions League final scorer Divock Origi](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1135114/Divock-Origi-Liverpool-Champions-League-we-done-it-Tottenham) as backup and [on-loan Harry Wilson](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49249224) [netting twice in the Premier League already this term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-wilson/leistungsdaten/spieler/279455), Glatzel has plenty of more experienced forwards ahead of him at Anfield.

However, the club’s desire to give him a new contract shows the strong faith they have in him and, with a promising scoring record in the youth and reserve ranks, his emergence has made Duncan very much disposable.
