# Liverpool: Interest in Piotr Zielinski returns

**Liverpool are reportedly willing to rival Manchester City in the race to sign Piotr Zielinski, as their interest in the midfielder returns.**

### The Lowdown: Former Liverpool target

Earlier in Jurgen Klopp’s reign, the Poland international was endlessly [linked](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36695597) as a target for the Anfield boss, but the transfer never ended up coming to fruition.

Zielinski was considered someone who the Liverpool boss was a big admirer of, but he ended up staying put at Udinese despite even [posing with the famous red shirt](https://metro.co.uk/2016/05/16/top-transfer-target-piotr-zielinski-pictured-wearing-liverpool-shirt-5884130/?).

### The Verdict: Potential top-class signing

The departure of Gini Wijnaldum does heighten the need for a new central midfielder to come in this summer and Zielinski could be an ideal fit.

The [£45million-rated](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/piotr-zielinski/profil/spieler/181136) midfielder notched an impressive [eight goals and 10 assists](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/118169/Show/Piotr-Zielinski) in Serie A last season, showing he could add more guile in the middle of the park.

Granted, he may not be as defensively solid as some, averaging just [0.5 tackles and interceptions](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/118169/Show/Piotr-Zielinski) apiece, but he still possesses a good work-rate and team ethic.
