# Liverpool: Reds set to battle Real Madrid for Jude Bellingham’s signature

**[Liverpool](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/) are competing with Real Madrid for the signature of Jude Bellingham, according to [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3583126/2022/09/11/watching-jude-bellingham-dortmund-leipzig/).**

### The lowdown

The [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) giants have identified the 19-year-old as their top target for the 2023 summer transfer window, as per [James Pearce](https://theathletic.com/3558910/2022/09/01/liverpool-arthur-melo-juventus-late/).

The Englishman is currently ‘[rated](https://theathletic.com/3558910/2022/09/01/liverpool-arthur-melo-juventus-late/)‘ at £100m, so he could [break Liverpool’s transfer record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transferrekorde/verein/31). That is currently the [£75m](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42496637) that they paid to sign Virgil van Dijk in 2018, although this summer’s recruitment of Darwin Nunez [may overtake that figure](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/61742358) if add-ons are activated.

Liverpool have already lost to Real Madrid in the race for one midfielder, with Aurelien Tchouameni [choosing to join Los Blancos](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aurelien-tchouameni-explains-chose-real-24225512) over the Reds earlier this year.

### The verdict

This is a big update from The Athletic.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke told [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88057430-man-utd-will-be-in-the-race-for-103m-machine-at-old-trafford) that ‘all top European clubs’ will be in the race for Bellingham, but it seems that Liverpool and Real Madrid are the two clubs who have stolen a march on the rest.

It’s little wonder that the former Birmingham City man is so coveted. In 2020/21, he was named the Bundesliga’s [Newcomer of the Season](https://www.spielergewerkschaft.de/de/VDV/Aktuelles/Detail/1347/Aktuelles-%7C-Meldung-%7C-VDV-11-2020%2F2021.htm), and he [made the league’s Best XI](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/ea-sports-team-of-the-season-2021-22-overview-19624) the following year. He provided a highly impressive [14 assists in all competitions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jude-bellingham/leistungsdaten/spieler/581678/plus/0?saison=2021) last season, scoring six goals as well.

At the age of 19, he has already racked up [15 senior caps for his country](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jude-bellingham/nationalmannschaft/spieler/581678), along with making [17 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jude-bellingham/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/581678) in the Champions League. That is a marker of just how special a talent he truly is, and what a coup it would be for Liverpool if they can see off Real Madrid in the transfer race.
