# Liverpool: Reds urged to sign Ryan Sessegnon by former player

**Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol feels that the Reds should look to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham to compete with Andrew Robertson at left-back.**

Speaking on [ESPN FC](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIXxQiZCF_E) \[[via Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1154594/Liverpool-transfer-news-Ryan-Sessegnon-Andy-Robertson)\], Nicol said that he would like to see his former club secure the 19-year-old defender as a back-up to Robertson, who is currently Liverpool’s only recognised left-back.

The [Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1154594/Liverpool-transfer-news-Ryan-Sessegnon-Andy-Robertson) quoted Nicol as saying: “He’s there to push and he’s there to make the 11 that start better. He’s still a teenager, still has a lot to learn, but what, in two or three years time, he’s pushing Robertson or anybody else down that left-hand side.”

Sessegnon has been linked with a move to Tottenham, with [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/revealed-tottenham-now-confident-of-signing-player-for-25m-next-week/) reporting that Spurs were hopeful of completing a £25million deal for the player in the next week. However, [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/9533750/ryan-sessegnon-tottenham-transfer-fulham-instagram-like/) claimed that Fulham want a fee of up to £45m for the teenager.

Although he has [played mainly as a left-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-sessegnon/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/392775), Sessegnon is very much a player who can cover the full length of the pitch, having also been [regularly deployed as a left-winger](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-sessegnon/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/392775) (via Transfermarkt).

He [scored 16 goals and registered eight assists in 49 league games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-sessegnon/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/392775) in Fulham’s promotion season of 2017/18 but those numbers fell to [two goals and six assists from 35 Premier League matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ryan-sessegnon/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/392775) last term, which [ended in relegation for the Cottagers](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/apr/02/fulham-relegated-from-premier-league-watford-match-report). His attacking licence enabled him to record match averages of [0.9 key passes and 0.4 crosses](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/322611/Show/Ryan-Sessegnon) last season (as per WhoScored).

Robertson has been nowhere near as prolific in his two years at Liverpool, scoring just [once in 78 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andrew-robertson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234803). However, he has been an excellent source of goals for the Reds, with [18 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andrew-robertson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234803) in that time. His tally of [11 assists in the Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andrew-robertson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234803) last season was [bettered by only four players](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goal_assist?se=210). Also, he rated higher than Sessegnon in 2018/19 for key passes ([1.4 per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/115726/Show/Andrew-Robertson)) and crosses ([0.6 per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/115726/Show/Andrew-Robertson)).

In pre-season, academy prospect Adam Lewis has [featured at left-back for Liverpool](https://www.skysports.com/football/bradford-vs-liverpool/407529) and his performances have won praise from former Reds [John Aldridge](https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/john-aldridge-liverpool-have-taken-a-transfer-risk-but-three-future-stars-could-see-that-it-pays-off-38315483.html) and [Jason McAteer](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2019/07/18/jason-mcateer-backs-adam-lewis-to-replace-alberto-moreno-at-live/). The former told the [Irish Independent](https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/john-aldridge-liverpool-have-taken-a-transfer-risk-but-three-future-stars-could-see-that-it-pays-off-38315483.html) that “something would have to go very badly wrong for Lewis not to hit the big-time because he has all the raw materials to become a star”.

Sessegnon has Premier League experience, [unlike Lewis](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-lewis/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/347481), and he has shown that he can be a creative threat from the left flank.

However, Fulham’s reported valuation of £45m is steep for a player who would likely be the second choice behind Robertson and whose statistics are inferior to the Scotland captain, who [cost Liverpool just £10m](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40666486).

Also, his arrival would likely hamper the progress of Lewis, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has shown that full-backs at Liverpool can emerge rapidly from the academy to become comfortable at first-team level, so Liverpool can afford to leave Sessegnon to Tottenham.
