# Liverpool TT Roundup: Elijah Dixon-Bonner signs new deal, Xherdan Shaqiri tipped to leave, pundit tells Reds to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic

**In this instalment of our TT Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Liverpool recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.**

**Elijah Dixon-Bonner signs contract extension**

Teenage midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner has signed a contract extension with Liverpool, as reported by [the club’s official website](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/373706-elijah-dixon-bonner-signs-lfc-contract-extension?).

As noted by [liverpoolfc.com](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/373706-elijah-dixon-bonner-signs-lfc-contract-extension?), the 18-year-old has penned a new deal just nine months after signing his first professional contract at Anfield, having joined the club from Arsenal in 2015.

**Verdict**

According to [liverpoolfc.com](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/373706-elijah-dixon-bonner-signs-lfc-contract-extension?), Dixon-Bonner is “a creative midfielder” who carries “a noticeable attacking threat” and [scored twice against Wigan](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/373706-elijah-dixon-bonner-signs-lfc-contract-extension?) recently, although a record of [five goals in 72 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/elijah-dixon-bonner/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/433180) for Liverpool’s underage sides prior to that brace suggests otherwise.

He has [captained the Reds’ under-23 side](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/373706-elijah-dixon-bonner-signs-lfc-contract-extension?) on several occasions this season and has seen team-mates such as Caoimhin Kelleher, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Rhian Brewster[getting chances with the first team in the Carabao Cup](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/0?reldata=CGB%262019) this season,

With Jurgen Klopp’s side facing [14 games in six weeks](https://talksport.com/football/622984/liverpool-fixture-schedule-jurgen-klopp-carabao-cup-club-world-cup/), starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, Dixon-Bonner might be called upon for a first-team debut soon, having been rewarded with a new deal this week.

**Pundit expects transfer battle for Xherdan Shaqiri**

Former England striker Darren Bent feels that Tottenham and Arsenal could engage in a battle to sign Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri in January.

Bent told [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-bent-tips-tottenham-and-arsenal-to-battle-for-liverpool-player-who-wants-2020-exit/): “I think Arsenal would probably take him, Manchester City nope, Chelsea nope, Spurs may potentially take him as well. I think there will be no shortage of takers so he has nothing to fear about that.”

[Football Insider](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/liverpool/liverpool-xherdan-shaqiri-considering-anfield-exit-next-year/) recently reported that Shaqiri has told close confidants that he is considering leaving the Reds due to a lack of game-time.

**Verdict**

Having played just [25 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/leistungsdaten/spieler/86792) all season, Shaqiri’s reported desire to move on from Liverpool is understandable, with the Swiss winger sidelined for the last two months with a calf injury, as per the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/xherdan-shaqiri-injury-latest-liverpool-17125727).

The 28-year-old has [not scored once in 2019](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/alletore/spieler/86792) for the Reds, but he ended last year in excellent form with [six goals in nine league games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/86792/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31), illustrating the threat he can bring to the team when at his best.

With fellow winger Mohamed Salah nursing an ankle injury and no return date set (as per [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11860813/mohamed-salah-liverpool-forwards-return-date-unclear-after-ankle-injury)), Shaqiri could yet have a key role to play for Liverpool this season, which may instigate a change in stance from the player.

**Pundit advises Liverpool to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic**

![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/2019-09-16T045915Z_296211050_NOCID_RTRMADP_3_MLS-SPORTING-KANSAS-CITY-AT-LA-GALAXY-1024x683.jpg)

Former Scotland player Craig Burley believes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be an ideal signing for Liverpool, saying that the 38-year-old would bring “something different” to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Speaking to [ESPN FC](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-nZDJ49P_M), Burley thinks that the Swedish veteran, a [free agent after recently leaving LA Galaxy](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12096/11860640/zlatan-ibrahimovic-leaves-la-galaxy-but-the-story-continues), would be an excellent short-term acquisition for the Reds.

He told [ESPN FC](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-nZDJ49P_M): “We’re talking about coming off the bench and bringing something different for 20 or 30 minutes. I really think he could offer something to a team like that for six months. There is not many better that can produce something magical when needed.”

**Verdict**

Despite his advancing years, Ibrahimovic’s goal-poaching instinct is as sharp as ever, with [31 goals in as many games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/zlatan-ibrahimovic/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/3455) for LA Galaxy this year.

Three seasons ago, he proved a successful short-term signing for Manchester United, scoring [28 goals in 46 games in 2016/17](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/zlatan-ibrahimovic/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/3455) and helping them to lift the [EFL Cup and Europa League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/zlatan-ibrahimovic/erfolge/spieler/3455).

With centre-forward Roberto Firmino on a [comparatively low three goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/roberto-firmino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/131789) for the season, having a natural goalscorer in Ibrahimovic to call upon should be very beneficial for Liverpool, especially if they need someone to tip the balance in tight games later in the campaign.
