# Look at him now: Loris Karius and Liverpool

**Sadly, the promising career of Loris Karius will always be remembered for all the wrong reasons at Anfield.**

The former Manchester City youth player had his big break back in his home nation Germany playing for 1.FSV Mainz 05, before moving back to England to join Liverpool for £4.7 million – a nominal, and probably a little naïve, fee considering the £66.9 million Klopp spent on Alisson.

“It’s a very good feeling and it’s an honour to play for a club like this,” he told the official club site (via *[Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/10293364/liverpool-sign-mainz-goalkeeper-loris-karius-on-long-term-contract)*). Adding, “They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield.

“I know a lot about the club from watching them on TV. The history, everybody who plays football knows. There a lot of things in my head when I think of this club.”

It was undoubtedly one of the greatest and worst moments of Loris Karius’ career when he made the Champions League final with Liverpool; the sheer jubilation of competing for one of football’s most illustrious trophies marred by two awful mistakes.

The first came when he literally chucked the ball at Benzema for a tap-in and the second a miscalculated Gareth Bale’s shot.

The German’s career hit a very, very steep decline from this point on.

An extremely poor pre-season (at least from a personal perspective) returned more comical errors, as he fumbled, stumbled and choked his way around England’s lowest tiers; and it was becoming increasingly obvious that he would never return to form in a Liverpool shirt again.

If his tale was not tragic enough, his move to Besiktas has taken a rotten turn.

According to *[Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-support-loris-karius-besiktas-15967612)* Loris Karius has asked FIFA to intervene claiming he is owed four months wages; news which follows the scathing attack on the keeper by manager Senol Gunes.

“He was at fault for the goals he conceded,” Gunes said (as per *[Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-loanee-loris-karius-slammed-15958869)*). “Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game.

“It has been like that since the beginning. He does not really feel a part of the team, it’s something we haven’t been able to work out and, of course, I am partly to blame for this.

“Something is wrong, he has also been unlucky. \[He\] is talented but it hasn’t worked out and we have a problem. Let me put it this way, if I still had Tolga available I would play him.”

It is hard not to feel sorry for Karius, who is clearly having a torrid time in football at the moment.
