# Manchester City: Fans call for John Stones to be sold amid reported Newcastle transfer interest

**Plenty of Manchester City fans have reacted to reports suggesting that another Premier League club is interested in signing John Stones, with many hopeful that such a transfer will materialise.**

[The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/05/24/exclusive-rafael-benitez-wants-make-second-coming-newcastle/)‘s Matt Law reported that Rafael Benitez wants to return to Newcastle under their prospective new Saudi owners and would like to bring the 25-year-old defender to St James’ Park if he gets back on board with the Tyneside outfit. The story was later shared on Twitter by [@City\_Xtra](https://twitter.com/City_Xtra/status/1264648775320166400).

Stones, a [£47.5m signing](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11679/10528801/john-stones-joins-manchester-city-in-475m-deal) from Everton in 2016, was the [subject of plentiful criticism](https://www.goal.com/en/news/i-am-going-in-the-right-direction-man-city-defender-stones/ivk6kzku4rzr1spebey8w8fr2) in his first season at the Etihad Stadium after some questionable displays, and the 2019/20 campaign has at times been another frustrating one for the England international.

He has [missed 13 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/verletzungen/spieler/186590) this term through various injuries, having had [several spells out injured](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/verletzungen/spieler/186590) in his time at the club, and [his error led to Aston Villa’s goal](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-john-stones-mistake-17842925) in a hard-fought Carabao Cup final triumph in March. Among [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Show/England-Man-City)‘s overall average match ratings for the 2019/20 season, he is 17th out of 22 players in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
