# Man City: Sky Blues ‘working’ on Rico Lewis contract extension

**[Manchester City](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-city-news/) are ‘working’ on arranging a long-term contract extension for Rico Lewis, according to Fabrizio Romano.**

### The Lowdown: Lewis profiled

The right-back is an academy product of the Sky Blues, and having worked his way up through the ranks, he made his [first-team debut](https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/man-city-bournemouth-premier-league-match-report-63795987#:~:text=handed%20Rico%20Lewis%20his%20debut) in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) in August.

Three months later, Pep Guardiola [named](https://www.flashscore.co.uk/match/U1oAgTsC/#/match-summary/lineups) the 17-year-old in his starting XI for the Champions League game against Sevilla, which saw him [score](https://www.skysports.com/football/manchester-city-vs-sevilla/477442) on his opening appearance in the competition.

The teenager’s current deal isn’t set to expire until [2025](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1587929650998689799?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1587929650998689799%7Ctwgr%5E2f4d26ab751eb6daf980a3cb4c6f64726569fda9%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.si.com%2Fsoccer%2Fmanchestercity%2Fnews%2Fmanchester-city-planning-on-contract-extension-for-rico-lewis), but the club aren’t wasting any time in trying to secure his services beyond that date.

### The Latest: Lewis’ contract in the works

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/fabrizioromano/status/1590653744525582336?s=46&t=Re-wUNW2W7oHOAkmP8HhnA), Romano revealed that City are already planning behind the scenes to extend Lewis’ stay at the Etihad Stadium, and the 17-year-old’s manager has been full of praise for him.

Romano wrote: “Manchester City are working to get Rico Lewis’ new long-term deal done – it will be discussed in the next weeks/months.”

The Italian also shared these comments from Guardiola: “He’s exceptional. He’s 17 years old, he was perfect against Chelsea… the future will be bright for Rico, I trust him for the future”.

### The Verdict: Fully deserved

City offering Lewis a fresh deal will be nothing less than he deserves given the impact that he has been able to make in order to force his way into Guardiola’s first-team plans.

Labelled ‘[special](https://www.planetsport.com/soccer/news/pep-guardiola-full-praise-manchester-citys-latest-record-breaker-rico-lewis)’ by the manager himself, the youngster has scored six goals and provided three assists across his appearances at youth and senior level, which is hugely impressive for a defender of his age ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rico-lewis/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/701057)).

With Kyle Walker ruled out through [injury](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker/verletzungen/spieler/95424) and Joao Cancelo [playing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-cancelo/leistungsdaten/spieler/182712) on the opposite flank as a result, Lewis has been gifted a golden opportunity to prove himself as he looks to make his mark on the big stage.
