# Manchester United: Fans slam Ed Woodward for reported intervention in possible Ousmane Dembele transfer

**A number of Manchester United fans have hit out at the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for his apparent intervention in a deal which could see** **Ousmane Dembele coming to Old Trafford.**

After initial reports in [AS](https://as.com/futbol/2020/09/29/primera/1601395556_455654.html?id_externo_rsoc=CM_ES_TW) that the Red Devils were nearing a move for the 23-year-old, Spanish journalist Francesc Aguilar [tweeted](https://twitter.com/FApor_elmundo/status/1310991102317662208?s=20) that the player’s representatives had confirmed that news to him.

He added that ‘the operation would close’ at roughly €75m (£68.52m) and [later tweeted](https://twitter.com/FApor_elmundo/status/1310993383977033729?s=20) that Woodward had contacted Dembele’s entourage, having been trying for some time to convince him to move to Old Trafford. Aguilar [signed off](https://twitter.com/FApor_elmundo/status/1310993383977033729?s=20) by saying that the Red Devils ‘have succeeded’ in that mission.

The French forward has a modest return of [19 goals in 75 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ousmane-dembele/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/288230/verein/131) for Barcelona since his [£124.2m move](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ousmane-dembele/transfers/spieler/288230) from Borussia Dortmund three years ago, with his time at Camp Nou blighted by [multiple lengthy injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ousmane-dembele/verletzungen/spieler/288230) and [criticism of his performances](https://en.as.com/en/2019/09/20/football/1568976154_206129.html).

Woodward has been a [target of flak from plenty of United fans](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/manchester-united/manchester-united-ed-woodward-comments-over-club-trajectory-sparks-criticism-from-supporters/) in recent months, with transfer activity [conspicuous by its near-absence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-united/transfers/verein/985) at Old Trafford, and many supporters weren’t impressed at his reported intervention to try and bring the injury-plagued Dembele to the club.

One fan drew comparisons with the acquisition of Angel di Maria in 2014 for a [then-British record fee of £59.7m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/aug/26/angel-di-maria-completes-move-to-manchester-united), with the Argentine then leaving a year later in [somewhat acrimonious circumstances](https://www.espn.com/soccer/manchester-united/story/2536641/angel-di-maria-misses-flight-to-join-up-with-man-united) after a [less than stellar season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/angel-di-maria/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/45320/verein/985) at Old Trafford.

> Classic Woodward, last minute panic buys, he either signs injury prone players or hasbeens, guess we’re getting both this window by the sounds of it, joke.

> This smells like Di Maria all over again, the player doesn’t want to leave the club, but Man United get him anyways because they have the money to get players in who aren’t 100% in for us! Get Woodward out man!

> What exactly has Ed Woodward accomplished in football to warrant this? If [@ManUtd](https://twitter.com/ManUtd?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) sign a player with that injury record, then the downfall has truly reached the bottom!
