# Sunderland: Neil Warnock ‘wants’ job despite Roy Keane talks

**Scott Wilson has revealed that Neil Warnock ‘wants’ to become the new manager at Sunderland, despite talks with Roy Keane.**

### The Lowdown: Keane talks

Former Black Cats manager Keane has reportedly [spoken](https://twitter.com/LukeEdwardsTele/status/1489170185118437378) to the Wearside club about a potential return to the Stadium of Light, and The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards expects a decision to be made by the ‘[start of next week at the latest](https://twitter.com/LukeEdwardsTele/status/1489172041047621632)‘.

However, he is [not the only candidate](https://twitter.com/SkySports_Keith/status/1489186059166568448) being taken into consideration, so others will have a chance to impress the board and thus take the role vacated by Lee Johnson.

### The Latest: Warnock ‘wants’ job

As per [The Northern Echo](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19891595.neil-warnock-wants-new-sunderland-manager/) journalist Scott Wilson, Warnock ‘wants’ to become the next Sunderland manager and ‘would be happy’ to take on the role until the end of the season.

Wilsone [tweeted](https://twitter.com/Scottwilsonecho/status/1488568276703711242): *“Neil Warnock wants to be #SAFC‘s next manager – and would be happy to take on a role until the end of the season…”*

### The Verdict: Not a bad choice

Should discussions with Keane fall through, then Warnock would certainly not be a bad alternative.

Described as an ‘[incredible](https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stories-memories-rollockings-laughs-behind-19037552)‘ coach by Sol Bamba, one of his former players at Cardiff City, the 73-year-old would help steady the ship before helping Sunderland to really push hard for automatic promotion from League One.

\[freshpress-poll id=”387213″\]

His record speaks for itself, as he has been promoted no fewer than eight times, with two of those coming from the third tier of English football ([The Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/neil-warnock-interested-sunderland-head-22958506)), and some Black Cats fans even [called](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/league-one/sunderland/sunderland-fans-call-for-neil-warnock-as-ppg-ends-promotion-hopes/) for him to be appointed before Johnson was given the job.

He would likely be a popular appointment in the northeast, and he seems to be a manager who the supporters could instantly get behind.
