# Manchester City: Club eye Lautaro Martinez as future Sergio Aguero replacement

**As Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero enters his twilight years, the time has arguably come for the club to identify a future successor.\**

The Argentine’s contribution to this City golden era has been unprecedented, becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer whilst bagging arguably the most important strike in the club’s history on the last day of the 2011/2012 season.

If ever a player warranted a statue, Aguero is that man.

However, with the 31-year-old slowly approaching that stage in his career, the Citizens have already begun identifying who could be his potential successor – at least according to [Calciomercato via Sport Witness.](https://sportwitness.co.uk/manchester-city-evaluate-serie-player-potential-successor-pep-guardiolas-star/)

Reports suggest that Inter Milan forward (and compatriot of Aguero’s) Lautaro Martinez fits the bill – possessing a similar playing style whilst also showing potential to emulate the City striker in the future.

Martinez wasn’t exactly prolific for Inter last season, at least nowhere near [Aguero’s standards](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/14260/History/Sergio-Ag%C3%BCero), scoring [six goals and grabbing two assists in 27 appearances](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/299344/History/Lautaro-Mart%C3%ADnez) – but so far this campaign he has improved a fair amount.

This season, the 22-year-old has bagged two goals and an assist in seven league games – looking to replicate the form he possessed at Racing Club – where he shone with [13 strikes in 20 outings, as per WhoScored.com.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/299344/History/Lautaro-Mart%C3%ADnez)

Luring Martinez away from the San Siro will be no easy task for the champions, with the club putting a £111m release clause on his contract.

If the claims are to be believed, City will monitor the situation and potentially come in with a bid depending on the striker’s form over the next two seasons – although they are not the only ones in pursuit.

Barcelona are also looking to the forward as a potential future replacement for Luis Suarez, who himself isn’t getting any younger.
