**According to a tweet by Daily Mail journalist [Mike Keegan](https://twitter.com/MikeKeegan_DM), the Premier League have suspended the fair play handshake before games until further notice – resulting in many Manchester City fans debating the news on Twitter.**

The [BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51760339) have also confirmed that the traditional pre-match handshake, which used to take place before every Premier League encounter, will be temporarily suspended due to fears of spreading the coronavirus. The virus, which has spread to [87](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51760339) countries in total, amassing over [90,000](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51760339) cases worldwide, is a respiratory illness which is easily spread and highly contagious.

According to a report from the [Australian Government](https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov), symptoms can range from a mild cough to pneumonia – with the Premier League now taking action in order to potentially stop the virus from spreading any further. As a result, plenty of Manchester City fans have been debating the update concerning their club on social media – with a mixed set of reactions from ‘[cancel the season](https://twitter.com/mxncityszn/status/1235655312163647490)‘ to blasting the news as ‘[ridiculous](https://twitter.com/alexbrady89/status/1235634480301240320)‘.
