# Manchester City: Fans fume at Lionel Messi update

**Manchester City fans are far from happy after a transfer update suggested they will not be entering the Lionel Messi sweepstakes this summer.**

[Barcelona announced](https://www.fcbarcelona.com/en/football/first-team/news/2207655/leo-messi-not-staying-at-fc-barcelona) on Thursday evening that Messi will be leaving the club this summer, which will bring an end to a 21-year spell in Catalonia.

Messi has made 778 appearances in total for the Spanish giants, scoring [672 goals and adding 305 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lionel-messi/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/28003) in total for them over the years.

That includes [38 goals and 14 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lionel-messi/leistungsdaten/spieler/28003/plus/0?saison=2020) from the 2020/21 season, as Barcelona finished third in the La Liga table.

It had then been reported by the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9867683/Manchester-City-Lionel-Messis-choice-PSG-switch-looks-impossible.html) that Manchester City and PSG were rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign Messi, although talks were still at an early stage over any potential agreement.

But [The Times’ Pol Ballus](https://twitter.com/polballus/status/1423343193798713348?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1423343193798713348%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.caughtoffside.com%2F2021%2F08%2F05%2Flionel-messi-man-city-barcelona%2F) has poured cold water on any potential agreement between Manchester City and Messi by claiming that the Argentina international isn’t even part of their transfer plans ahead of the 2021/22 season, which gets underway next week.

Plenty of Manchester City supporters took to social media to react to the update on the club’s rumoured stance on signing Messi this summer.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from the [City Xtra Twitter account](https://twitter.com/City_Xtra/status/1423343483687931915) below….
