# Manchester City: Fans hope John Stones will be sold after reported Newcastle interest

**A number of Manchester City fans have called for John Stones to be sold after reports of Premier League interest in the defender.**

[90min.com](https://www.90min.com/posts/newcastle-to-target-british-stars-including-chris-smalling-john-stones-under-new-saudi-ownership-01e7me66nrqa?view_source=categories_page&view_medium=[transfer]) reported that Newcastle, whose prospective takeover is expected to go through in the next few weeks, have targeted the 25-year-old as a possible signing as the projected new owners seek to invest in British players. News of the Geordies’ reported interest in Stones was later shared on Twitter by [@City\_Chief](https://twitter.com/City_Chief/status/1258034331538391041).

The centre-back was a [£47.5m signing](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11679/10528801/john-stones-joins-manchester-city-in-475m-deal) from Everton in 2016 and he has gone on to make [129 appearances under Pep Guardiola](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/leistungsdatentrainer/spieler/186590/plus/0/verein/281/trainer_id/5672) at Manchester City, winning [eight trophies](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/erfolge/spieler/186590) in his time at the Etihad Stadium, including [two Premier League titles](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/erfolge/spieler/186590).

However, Stones endured a difficult first season at the club which saw him [subjected to plenty of criticism](https://www.goal.com/en/news/i-am-going-in-the-right-direction-man-city-defender-stones/ivk6kzku4rzr1spebey8w8fr2), while his time in Manchester has been [dogged by numerous injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/verletzungen/spieler/186590). This season alone, he has [missed 14 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-stones/verletzungen/spieler/186590) as Guardiola has also had to contend with the [long-term absence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aymeric-laporte/verletzungen/spieler/176553) of another centre-back in Aymeric Laporte.
