**Plenty of Manchester City fans joined in a debate that was raised on Twitter by [@City\_Chief](https://twitter.com/City_Chief/status/1258071526768689153), who asked followers to pick their best signing under Pep Guardiola – with one man’s name in particular appearing abundantly.**

In January 2018, the club broke their transfer record to bring in Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for £57m (as per [BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42873612)) and within a few weeks of his arrival he had a [Premier League winner’s medal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aymeric-laporte/erfolge/spieler/176553), playing in [nine games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aymeric-laporte/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/176553) in City’s [record-breaking 100-point campaign](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/05/13/manchester-city-become-first-team-hit-100-premier-league-points/).

The French centre-back then enjoyed a magnificent first full season at the Etihad Stadium in which he won [four trophies](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aymeric-laporte/erfolge/spieler/176553) in total, achieved a [92.7%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) passing success rate, won [2.2](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) headers per game (putting him in the [top four in City’s squad for both metrics](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368)) and started [34 league matches](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) as they retained their domestic crown.

The 25-year-old was lauded by Guardiola last season after he set a 19-game record for the longest sequence of unbeaten Premier League starts since the beginning of his time in the division (as per [mancity.com](https://www.mancity.com/citytv/interviews/2018/november/man-city-southampton-pep-guardiola-press-conference-video-open)), while he has been badly missed this season with a [long-term knee injury](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aymeric-laporte/verletzungen/spieler/176553), with City [on the brink](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) of relinquishing their status as league champions to Liverpool.

These Manchester City fans on Twitter cited Laporte as the current manager’s best signing at the club ahead of the likes of [Bernardo Silva, Ederson and Leroy Sane](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pep-guardiola/spielertransfers/trainer/5672/plus/0/galerie/0?station_id=128184).
