# Manchester City: Fans were delighted with Benjamin Mendy’s appearance last night

**Manchester City have lost two defenders to injury in recent weeks, but one came back from a lengthy convalescence in last night’s [3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk](https://www.skysports.com/football/shak-donetsk-vs-man-city/report/420354).**

John Stones is set to be ruled out for at least four weeks, as reported by [The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/breaking-man-city-defensive-crisis-20082546), while Aymeric Laporte faces six months on the sidelines following a knee injury against Brighton in August, according to [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/sep/04/manchester-city-aymeric-laporte-knee-surgery-long-absence).

However, left-back Benjamin Mendy marked his return as an [83rd-minute substitute for Rodri](https://www.skysports.com/football/shak-donetsk-vs-man-city/teams/420354), making his first appearance since [last season’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Tottenham in April](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/benjamin-mendy/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/157495/verein/281) following knee surgery, as reported by [Manchester Evening News](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-benjamin-mendy-injury-16943221).

Sam Lee, [Manchester City correspondent for The Athletic](https://twitter.com/SamLee), tweeted about the noteworthy substitution via [@SamLee](https://twitter.com/SamLee/status/1174423078375481345).

Mendy has had horrendous luck with injuries in his time at the club, missing almost all of the 2017/18 season following a [cruciate ligament rupture](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/sep/28/benjamin-mendy-manchester-city-rupture-cruciate-ligament-injury) and also being ruled out of 26 matches last season with a series of injury problems, as per [TransferMarkt.co.uk](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/benjamin-mendy/verletzungen/spieler/157495).

These Manchester City fans on Twitter were delighted to see the [France international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/benjamin-mendy/profil/spieler/157495) making his comeback last night:
