[Ornstein added](https://twitter.com/bbcsport_david/status/1159725254597586944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1159725254597586944&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsportslens.com%2Freport-manchester-city-midfielder-ilkay-gundogan-signs-new-four-year-contract%2F273635%2F) that Gundogan had only one year left on his previous deal at Manchester City before the club, who view him as a key player, offered him a new contract to secure his services for another four years. And, Manchester City have now [confirmed](https://twitter.com/ManCity/status/1159736394128023552) that the German has committed his future. ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/THE-BREAKDOWN.png) Gundogan [joined Manchester City in 2016](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36430721) and started brightly at the club, scoring [five goals in 16 games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ilkay-gundogan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/53622) at the Etihad until a [knee ligament injury midway through the season](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/dec/16/manchester-city-ilkay-gundogan-ruled-out-season-cruciate-injury-knee) ruled him out for nine months. Upon returning from that long layoff, he has established himself as a regular presence in Pep Guardiola’s line-up, making [98 appearances in the past two seasons](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ilkay-gundogan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/53622) in which he has scored [12 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ilkay-gundogan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/53622) (one per 8.17 games) and provided [15 assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ilkay-gundogan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/53622) (one per 6.53 games). He recorded a passing success rate of [90.8%](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/77464/History/Ilkay-G%C3%BCndogan) last season, the [highest of Manchester City’s central and defensive midfield players](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368). Fernandinho’s accuracy was [87.5%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) and Phil Foden had an [86.6%](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) success rate. New signing Rodri recorded a slightly higher passing success rate than Gundogan in 2018/19 with [91.1%](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303139/Show/Rodrigo) (via WhoScored). The Germany midfielder made the most key passes of that quartet last season, his average of [1.4 per game bettered by only four players at the Etihad](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368). Fernandinho averaged [0.8 key passes per match](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368), with Foden averaging [0.6](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/167/Archive/England-Manchester-City?stageId=16368) and Rodri just [0.5](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303139/Show/Rodrigo). Guardiola has spoken very highly of the 28-year-old, telling [mancity.com](https://www.mancity.com/news/first%20team/first%20team%20news/2019/january/pep%20guardiola%20wolves%20press%20conference%20part%202) that “Gundogan is so clever. He plays a lot of passes; his quality is incredible. He arrives at the right time at right moment; he is incredible.” The midfielder was not at his best after coming on as a substitute in the Community Shield last weekend, [misplacing three of his 19 passes](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1373296/Live/England-Community-Shield-2018-2019-Liverpool-Manchester-City) to leave him with an uncharacteristically low success rate of [84.2%](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1373296/Live/England-Community-Shield-2018-2019-Liverpool-Manchester-City). However, he appeared at a time when Liverpool were dominant, with the [Reds having eight shots to Manchester City’s one after Gundogan entered the fray](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1373296/Live/England-Community-Shield-2018-2019-Liverpool-Manchester-City). ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Verdict.png) Gundogan has proven to be very composed in possession for Manchester City and his manager has alluded to his intelligence as a [box-to-box midfielder](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ilkay-gundogan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/53622). Having made [23 Premier League starts last season](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/77464/History/Ilkay-G%C3%BCndogan) compared to just [15 in 2017/18](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/77464/History/Ilkay-G%C3%BCndogan), Guardiola appears to be showing an ever-increasing level of faith in him. Manchester City’s midfield should be all the stronger with him being a part of it for the next four years until he is 32 and, with Fernandinho now 34 and Rodri only 23, Gundogan seems perfectly placed to fill the central midfield void that the Brazil man will leave while providing an experienced guiding hand for the younger Spaniard. ***Manchester City fans, how happy are you to see Gundogan signing a new four-year deal?
