# Manchester City: Joao Cancelo completes Etihad move and Danilo joins Juventus

**Manchester City completed the signing of right-back Joao Cancelo from Juventus last night, with Danilo moving in the opposite direction.**

[ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/3913217/man-city-sign-full-back-cancelo-from-juventus) reported that the deal for the 25-year-old Portugal defender was finalised yesterday and he joins the Premier League champions for a fee of £27.6million.

As part of the deal, Danilo has left Manchester City to take Cancelo’s place at Juventus, with the deal worth £55.25m in total, according to [ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/3914977/juventus-sign-right-back-danilo-from-man-city).

Cancelo has become Pep Guardiola’s fourth summer signing after [Rodri](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48859841), [Angelino](https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/first-team-news/2019/july/man-city-sign-angelino-psv-transfer-latest-update) and [Zack Steffen](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-zach-steffen-transfer-15538714).

This is the third consecutive summer in which Cancelo has moved clubs, having [joined Inter from Valencia](https://www.inter.it/en/news/59321/cancelo-is-an-inter-player) in 2017 before [switching to Juventus](https://www.juventus.com/en/news/news/2018/joao-cancelo-joins-juventus.php) last year.

He has had a consistent goal contribution record in recent seasons, with [a goal and five assists last term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-cancelo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/182712) and [a goal and four assists in each of the two campaigns prior to 2018/19](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-cancelo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/182712). He played [34 times for Juventus](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-cancelo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/182712), where he averaged 0.03 goals and 0.15 assists per game.

Manchester City have signed a player who has shown he can get forward to very good effect. Last season, he averaged [1.4 key passes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo) and supplied [one cross per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo). He proved very adept at bringing the ball forward with him, with an impressive [match average of 2.4 dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo) (via WhoScored).

Defensively, Cancelo averaged [1.7 tackles per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo) last season, but his [0.6 interceptions per match](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo) was a rather disappointing figure.

Danilo made just [22 appearances for Manchester City in 2018/19](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/danilo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/145707), ending the season with [one goal and one assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/danilo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/145707), averages of 0.05 per game.

While he had a slightly better scoring ratio than Cancelo, he was not as effective in getting forward as the Portugal man. Danilo averaged just [0.4 key passes and 0.2 crosses per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/88300/History/Danilo) in 2018/19 and provided far fewer assists.

Cancelo will now compete with Kyle Walker for the right-back slot at the Etihad Stadium. The England man played [52 times for Manchester City last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95424), [scoring twice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95424) (0.04 per game) and supplying [one assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95424) (0.02 per game).

Walker does not share his new team-mates knack for setting up chances, with just [0.7 key passes and 0.1 crosses per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69778/History/Kyle-Walker) last season and a comparatively low [match average of 0.5 dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69778/History/Kyle-Walker). However, his [90.1% passing success rate](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69778/History/Kyle-Walker) is notably better than Cancelo’s [86.2%](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/128967/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Cancelo), as was his [1.1 interceptions per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69778/History/Kyle-Walker), so ball retention and cutting out opposition attacks are two areas where the ex-Juventus man can evidently improve.

Cancelo’s knack for taking the ball into attacking positions and then utilising it to good effect could give Walker some serious competition at right-back, even if the England man did his credentials no harm with a [heroic goal-line clearance in last Sunday’s Community Shield](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/49228508).

Although Danilo has been a decent performer in his two years at Manchester City, Cancelo’s greater attacking threat suggests that the Premier League champions have gotten the better of this two-way deal.
