# Man City: Fabrizio Romano claims Kalvin Phillips is set to stay

**Manchester City midfielder [Kalvin Phillips](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/kalvin-phillips/) is now set to stay at the club, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.**

### The Lowdown: Phillips’ City future

Since arriving at Man City for a fee of [£45m](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/12640261/kalvin-phillips-man-city-complete-transfer-of-leeds-united-midfielder) in the summer transfer window, Phillips has struggled to break into the starting XI, appearing for just [one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kalvin-phillips/leistungsdaten/spieler/351749) minute in the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/), although he was ruled out for [11](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kalvin-phillips/verletzungen/spieler/351749) games with a shoulder injury.

With Pep Guardiola publicly [criticising](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12773679/man-city-boss-pep-guardiola-on-kalvin-phillips-fitness-hes-not-injured-he-arrived-overweight) the midfielder for returning from the World Cup ‘overweight’, [reports](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-reignite-interest-in-kalvin-phillips-after-surprise-man-city-twist/) had linked him with a move to West Ham United, but it now appears as though he will be given a second chance by the manager.

### The Latest: Romano’s update

In his exclusive [CaughtOffside](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2023/01/03/man-city-transfer-news-kalvin-phillips-future-update/amp/) column, Romano has now claimed that City have no plans to change their current squad in January, so he cannot envisage the Englishman exiting the Etihad Stadium.

The Italian claimed he’s “sure” Guardiola will give Phillips more minutes between now and the end of the season, with a lack of form and injury issues being the cause of a lack of game time so far.

### The Verdict: Good news?

It is still early days in the 27-year-old’s Man City career, and he deserves another opportunity to prove himself, now that he appears to have recovered from his shoulder problem.

While it will be hard to displace the likes of Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan in the starting lineup, Phillips no doubt has the talent to do so if he is able to perform how he did for Leeds United and England, being labelled ‘[outstanding](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball/status/1404089415547469824?s=20&t=UMlApf71xOvD6f7N4tEKKQ)‘ by journalist Josh Bunting.

The defensive-midfielder has displayed his acumen in one-on-one situations by averaging [3.82](https://fbref.com/en/players/4f565d77/Kalvin-Phillips) tackles per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 99th percentile compared to his positional peers, and given a consistent run in the team, he could reignite this form with City, and help them in their race for the Premier League title.
