Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan has said that he would love to see Caglar Soyuncu playing at the Etihad Stadium.
The midfielder, whose parents are Turkish, told Fanatik that the Leicester defender was the one player from the eastern European country that he’d like to have at the Etihad, saying: “Caglar is the first thing that comes to my mind about the Turkish player I want to see in Manchester City.”
Gundogan added: “I agree with the general opinion of the football public. In this season, Caglar Soyuncu had the best performance in the Premier League after [Virgil] Van Dijk.”
Soyuncu, who is valued at £28.8m by TransferMarkt, has started all but one of Leicester’s Premier League games this season and has impressed for Brendan Rodgers’ team, helping them to keep 10 clean sheets in the division (as per TransferMarkt).
He is composed in possession with a passing success rate of 89.3% while his match average of 3.1 successful aerial duels puts him on a par with John Stones, Manchester City’s best performer in this regard. He wins 1.8 tackles per game, which is just short of Fernandinho’s 1.9 match average, while his 1.3 interceptions per game is bettered only by Joao Cancelo (1.4) among Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier named the 24-year-old Foxes defender in his Premier League team of the season, saying: “Everybody assumed they would miss Harry Maguire unbelievably, but they haven’t because of this guy, and his partnership with Jonny Evans has been superb too. He has been outstanding for Leicester.”
It’s easy to see why Gundogan would like to have Soyuncu as a team-mate given how impressive the Leicester defender has been in recent months, with the Turkish centre-back’s figures standing up to those at Manchester City.
Also, Guardiola has had troubles in the centre of defence this season, with Aymeric Laporte missing a large chunk of the campaign through injury and both Nicolas Otamendi and Stones enduring difficult periods which have led to criticism from some pundits and fans.
Do you think Man City should consider signing Caglar Soyuncu?
The Premier League champions were beaten to the chase for Maguire last summer but perhaps they ought to consider another central defensive raid on the King Power Stadium over the coming weeks.
