Reports from Spanish media have claimed that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is keen on bringing Ferran Torres to the club this summer.
Super Deporte reported that the Premier League champions, along with Juventus, are leading the chase to sign the Valencia winger, who is apparently top of Guardiola’s wish list in terms of potential reinforcements in wide attacking positions.
Manchester City are in the market for a winger this summer amid continuing reports of Leroy Sane potentially joining Bayern Munich.
Torres has been a regular presence in Valencia’s line-up this season, making 35 appearances in all competitions, with a tally of six goals and seven assists to his name. He picked up two of each in their Champions League campaign, including a goal and an assist in the home defeat to Atalanta in the round of 16. [via TransferMarkt]
The 20-year-old plays primarily on the right flank but is by no means inflexible, having been deployed in several other positions in recent months. One of those has been as a left winger, where he has indeed been rather effective. Torres has only been used twice on the left wing but scored on both occasions as well as picking up one assist, indicating that he can operate to good effect on either flank. [via TransferMarkt]
In that respect, the Valencia youngster is reminiscent of current Manchester City wide man Bernardo Silva. Like Torres, the Portugal forward has played mainly on the right wing but has also lined out on the left-hand side as well as in a central attacking midfield role. Also like Torres, Bernardo has been very effective whenever he has switched to the left, with three of his seven goals this season coming from that side despite playing just five times in that position out of 40 games. If Sane leaves this summer and Raheem Sterling is left as the only senior natural left winger in Guardiola’s squad, the addition of someone like Torres who can thrive in that role would seem ideal. Even notwithstanding the transfer rumours around the German, the Valencia youngster’s ability to operate on either flank would be a tremendous asset for the Manchester City manager to have.
Would Ferran Torres be a good signing for Man City?
Also, at 20, Torres could only be scratching the surface of his full potential now and, as mentors and role models go, the similarly versatile Bernardo would not be a bad one to have.
