According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are set to offer Riyad Mahrez a new contract this summer.

The Lowdown: Instant impact

The 31-year-old arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Premier League rivals Leicester in 2018 and has since gone on to become an integral member of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, clocking up 188 appearances during his four-year spell in Manchester.

However, the Algerian has just under 12 months remaining on his current contract with the Sky Blues, which means that his future may need to be decided this summer .

The Latest: Mahrez set for contract talks

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that City are keen to tie down Mahrez and are preparing to offer him a new deal.

The journalist wrote: “Not just Marc Cucurella as main target. Manchester City are prepared to offer Riyad Mahrez a new contract after Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus departures.

“Discussions will take place in the next weeks. Mahrez, in new contracts list at City with Rodri and Foden.”

The Verdict: Boost for Pep

With Jesus having already joined Arsenal and Sterling seemingly on his way to Chelsea, Guardiola will want to ensure that he retains the services of one of his longer-serving forwards, and arguably the most important.

The 75-cap Algeria international was City’s top scorer in all competitions, finding the net 24 times, five clear of Kevin De Bruyne in second, via BBC Sport.

This return in the final third was been a huge contributing factor to the Sky Blues getting their hands on the Premier League trophy once again, so it will be a massive boost for Guardiola if Mahrez puts pen to paper on a new contract and extends his stay in Manchester.
