Irish sports presenter Shane Stapleton has praised ‘understated’ Manchester City star Rodri for his performance against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
The Lowdown: Sky Blues soar to victory…
A Man of the Match display from club legend Kevin De Bruyne guided City to all three points, while summer signing Erling Haaland unsurprisingly grabbed the back pages yet again by getting in on the act.
Goals from the Norway star, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden rounded off a terrific afternoon for manager Pep Guardiola as the Sky Blues finished their pre-international break run of fixtures in style.
The Latest: Rodri praised…
The performances of Haaland, Grealish and De Bruyne proved to be City’s major talking points, although one player who put in an ‘understated’ display was Spain international Rodri.
Guardiola’s mainstay attracted praise from OurGame.ie presenter Stapleton, who took to social media in praise of the ex-Atletico Madrid star.
He explained: “I’m a big fan of Rodri, who makes Man City tick in such an understated way.”
The Verdict: Absolutely right…
We are in full agreement with Stapleton that Rodri’s contribution to this City team deserves far more attention. Indeed, it speaks volumes that the 26-year-old is an untouchable in Guardiola’s ever-rotating starting XI.
Only goalkeeper Ederson has played more league minutes than Rodri so far this season, who ranks as one of City’s top five best-performing players by average match rating (WhoScored).
Operating as a sole pivot in front of Guardiola’s back four, the midfield general consistently helps to dictate matches with his physicality and sublime range of passing.
Rodri has two assists to his name already this season and has won more aerial duels per 90 than any City player (WhoScored), highlighting his underrated role for the champions.
We hope to see the 6 foot 3 colossus gain more credit for his unique role in the coming months.
