The 2019/20 season at Manchester United has been a mixed one for the Old Trafford faithful, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men battled to finish third in the Premier League and secure Champions League qualification.
They also progressed to the semi-finals in three knockout competitions – the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League. Following last night’s defeat to Sevilla in the latter, it meant that they were beaten in the semi-final stage of a third different tournament this season – an unprecedented feat, as pointed out by journalist Richard Jolly.
He tweeted: “Manchester United are the first club ever to lose an FA Cup, League Cup and European semi-final in the same season.”
Obviously this will be very disappointing for fans of the club, as they would have wanted success, but it has still been a good effort on multiple fronts and the club should be happy with the progress they have made from last season, when they finished sixth and failed to make the semi-finals of any tournament.
It also highlights the need for greater squad depth so that they will be better equipped to go the distance when juggling multiple competitions, as they have done right throughout 2019/20.
Here is what these United fans said following the tweet from Jolly:
Manchester United are the first club ever to lose an FA Cup, League Cup and European semi-final in the same season.

How many others made it that far in a European competition this season from the PL? Please remind me?

In other words, Man United got to the Semis of FA cup, league cup and Europa League in a single season and also finished 3rd in a very competitive league.
For a football club that is rebuilding, it means they are making huge progress

We are known for setting and breaking records. We are the only club in premier league history that has done the treble in one season. Next season, we go again.
