Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez is set to sign a new contract with the Premier League club ‘in the coming weeks’, according to journalist Veronica Brunati.

The Lowdown: Instant impact

The Argentina international initially put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal in January 2022 but actually arrived at the Etihad Stadium last summer having spent the remainder of the season on loan at River Plate.

The Sky Blues forward has since made a rapid start to life in England, not to mention that he recently returned a World Cup winner, so with the attention he would have gained from the tournament, Pep Guardiola is keen to tie him down, as per recent reports.

Now, there has been a very positive update on the rumours of a new deal...

The Latest: Alvarez set for fresh terms

Taking to Twitter, Brunati revealed that City already spoke to Alvarez about committing to fresh terms prior to him leaving for Qatar, and that developments are now set to come to fruition in the weeks ahead.

"ManCity already planned and discussed a new contract with #JulianAlvarez before the World Cup due to his performance at @ManCity in the previous months.

“Having won the World Cup, it will take effect in the coming weeks.”

The Verdict: Fully deserved

Alvarez has had to play second fiddle to Erling Haaland for the majority of his City career so far, but given the impact he makes when selected, offering him a new deal is nothing less than he deserves.

The 22-year-old has posted ten goal contributions in 23 appearances across all competitions and currently ranks in the 99th percentile for pass completion by forwards across Europe, highlighting his prolific form and strong link-up play in the final third.

Alvarez will have a significant part to play for the Manchester outfit between now and the end of the season, where he will hope that he can contribute to securing his side the highest possible finish.
