Sky Sports and reporter Lyall Thomas have now shared a promising Manchester City update involving transfer target Sergio Gomez of Anderlecht.

The Lowdown: Guardiola eyes new left-back...

The Premier League champions, after selling former star Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, remain without the Ukranian's replacement as manager Pep Guardiola prepares his side for a blockbuster 2022/2023 campaign.

Having retained their domestic crown in rip-roaring fashion against Aston Villa last season, scoring three goals in five minutes on the final day to seal a 3-2 comeback, all eyes are now on whether the Sky Blues can fend off title rivals Liverpool again.

Since that memorable occasion, Guardiola's squad has changed significantly with the departures of Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

In their place, star striker Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega have arrived at Eastlands.

The Latest: City talks 'progressing' for Gomez...

Sharing news, Sky reporter Thomas has a promising update as City enter 'talks' to sign Anderlecht ace Gomez.

Having worked under club legend Vincent Kompany over 2021/2022, the links to Manchester are there and it is believed negotiations are 'progressing' for his signature.

Thomas explained:

"Talks progressing for #ManchesterCity to sign Sergio Gomez - but they are still in the market for another first-choice LB. #Anderlecht player seen as a development talent for the future."

The Verdict: Mixed bag...

While City's attempts to sign Gomez are moving forward, the fact Guardiola and co see him more as one for the future comes as a mixed update.

The defender was previously a member of Spain's Under-17's squad which reached the 2017 final against England.

While they were on the end of a 5-2 drubbing that game, Gomez himself bagged a brace and stood out as one of Spain's shining lights - with ex-Borussia Dortmund chief Michael Zorc even once calling him 'one of the best players of his age in the world'.

Gomez could well be a star at Eastlands one day, but it appears supporters will have to wait longer for an heir to Zinchenko in the first team.
