Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is closing in on another player alongside Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to reports.
The Lowdown: City agree Phillips deal…
As per a flurry of reliable reports in the last 24 hours, City have now agreed a deal to sign Phillips from the Whites as Guardiola is handed a big transfer boost for 2022/2023.
The Premier League champions have seemingly found their replacement for Fernandinho just three weeks into the summer window, coming after they sealed exciting attacking signings Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
Fabrizio Romano has now given his ‘here we go‘ to Phillips’ transfer and David Ornstein of The Athletic has also backed that Leeds have accepted an initial £42 million fee for the England international.
The Latest: Guardiola not done…
As now backed by Sky Sports reporter Florien Plettenberg, Guardiola is closing in on another signing amid the drama surrounding Phillips.
Indeed, Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper Stefan Ortega ‘will join’ the Blues as a free agent when his contract expires and a medical is scheduled for next week.
Plettenberg explained (via Twitter):
“News #Ortega: He will sign a contract until 2025! Medical should take place next week. He will join #MCFC as a free agent. What a transfer for him, what a development. Great character. Has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga.”
The Verdict: Good news?
While landing ‘one of the best’ keepers in Germany for zero transfer cost can be seen as good news, it does put real question marks around the future of current number two Zack Steffen.
The USA international, it seems, could be yet another City man added to the list of players who may well depart Eastlands this summer.
Indeed, going by Ortega’s arrival, Steffen could join the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez and Oleksandr Zinchenko (The Times), who have all been linked with a possible exit.
