He’s been described as an [‘important addition’](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1523825765162303488) at Old Trafford after serving as Ten Hag’s assistant for [47](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mitchell-van-der-gaag/profil/trainer/11774) games. There was [talk](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-sky-sports-share-mitchell-van-der-gaag-update/) last month that Van der Gaag could succeed Ten Hag as Ajax manager, but it looks as if a move to Manchester will now go through.

### The Latest: Romano’s update

[Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1524782720639021056) took to Twitter on Thursday evening to provide an update regarding Van der Gaag.

### The Verdict: Key

Ten Hag was clearly keen on bringing his assistant to Old Trafford, and despite taking longer than they may have liked, it looks as if the United boss will get his way.

The pair have enjoyed success working together this season, with Ajax recently securing the Dutch title after picking up [82 points from 33 games](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11913/12610973/european-round-up-erik-ten-hags-ajax-win-the-dutch-title-while-inter-milan-beat-juventus-to-lift-italian-cup).

Van der Gaag now looks set to be the first coaching staff addition under Ten Hag, and it’ll be interesting to see who else he brings in before turning his attention to a number of summer signings, with Steve McClaren’s name popping up once again regarding a [potential](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1524782720639021056) Old Trafford return.
