# Manchester United: Fans go in on Harry Maguire after Watford defeat

**Speaking to [Sky Sports via the Manchester Evening News \[16:23\]](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-vs-watford-highlights-17437866), Manchester United defender Harry Maguire pinpointed the reasons for his side’s[2-0 loss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIiU2BPWY9E) to Premier League bottom side Watford on Sunday afternoon, with supporters refusing to hold back their opinions on the Red Devils’ [record defensive signing.](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/08/manchester-united-signs-harry-maguire-leicester-190805121054955.html)**

Maguire, who spurned a [huge chance](https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2019/dec/22/watford-v-manchester-united-premier-league-live) to gain a goal back for his side during the defeat, spoke candidly after the game over potential reasons why they lost – hinting that the game [‘was there to be won’](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-vs-watford-highlights-17437866) in the first half and that they need to do better against [‘lower opposition sides’](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-vs-watford-highlights-17437866).

Ismaila Sarr gave the Hornets an unlikely lead after ‘keeper David de Gea fumbled his goal-bound shot before Troy Deeney doubled the hosts’ lead with a composed spot kick.

United had chances to potentially salvage something, with stars Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay and Maguire all failing to convert decent opportunities – but it was ultimately not enough to continue their [previous unbeaten streak](https://www.manutd.com/en/matches/fixtures-results).

As a result, supporters have hammered Maguire on social media. One fan dubbed him as ‘Phil Jones 2.0’, while another has called for Chris Smalling to return and replace him.

Take a look below…

> Maguire wouldn’t make top 10 Premier league defenders. Even Soyuncu is head and shoulder above him.
