The Portuguese forward, as an 18-year-old, used the occasion to open his account for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

The Scottish manager completed the deal for the teenager for a fee of just [£12.24m](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/3142959.stm) from Sporting Lisbon and he was presented with the No. 7 shirt, formerly worn by David Beckham who moved to Real Madrid shortly before the deal.

Ferguson [described](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/3142959.stm) Ronaldo as one of the most exciting young players he’d ever seen at the time and his instinct was not wrong.
