**Martin Atkinson has been officially named as the referee for Manchester United’s clash against fierce rivals Liverpool this weekend, per the [Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1190888/Manchester-United-Ole-Gunnar-Solskjaer-Jose-Mourinho-Liverpool-referee-Martin-Atkinson).**

The 48-year-old was the designated man in the middle when the two sides met last season – Jose Mourinho’s [last game in charge](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1190888/Manchester-United-Ole-Gunnar-Solskjaer-Jose-Mourinho-Liverpool-referee-Martin-Atkinson) of the club before being sacked after a 3-1 defeat by the Reds.

Atkinson is somewhat of a lucky charm for Liverpool, too. Jurgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in the last [13 games](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1190888/Manchester-United-Ole-Gunnar-Solskjaer-Jose-Mourinho-Liverpool-referee-Martin-Atkinson) the Dewsbury-born referee has officiated, making his appointment the very last thing United needed this weekend.

The Red Devils are in dire straights at the moment having [won just two league games all season](https://uk.soccerway.com/teams/england/manchester-united-fc/662/matches/).

Currently languishing [12th in the Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are in desperate need of a result against one of their biggest rivals on Sunday, but know that they’ve got their work cut out considering the fine form their opponents currently find themselves in; [unbeaten all season and top of the Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables).

Here’s how some United fans reacted to the news that Atkinson would be taking charge of this weekend’s game:
