# Manchester United: Fans react to transfer update on Chris Smalling

**A lot of Manchester United fans are reacting to the latest news surrounding defender Chris Smalling, who has [returned](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-smalling/profil/spieler/103427) to the club after a season-long loan in Italy with AS Roma last season.**

According to [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/club-ready-throw-everything-man-united-player-new-intermediary-want-done-e16-17m/) and tweeted out by [utdreport](https://twitter.com/utdreport/status/1297931356962529280?s=20), the Serie A side are hoping to try and convince United to allow Smalling to leave for a fee of around €16m-€17million (around £14.45 million), but for this to work, they need the defender to be very keen on returning to Italy.

Despite him struggling to be able to perform [consistently](https://www.goal.com/en-ke/news/vidic-reveals-reason-behind-smalling-jones-struggles-at/1h48yg1sh8hsu10sop56vli817) to the level required of a Manchester United player, Smalling clearly flourished last season in Serie A as the [30 year-old](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-smalling/profil/spieler/103427) managed on average four clearances and 1.9 interceptions a game, per [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/71345/Show/Chris-Smalling), whilst also scoring three goals and picking up two assists as well as keeping [six](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-smalling/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/103427/wettbewerb/IT1/saison/2019) clean sheets.

If he did not impress, Roma would not be so keen on taking him back. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly does not favour the Englishman as he allowed him to go on loan at such an age and a deal between the two clubs seems to benefit both parties.

Here is what fans said following the news:

> AS Roma's plan is to try and convince [#mufc](https://twitter.com/hashtag/mufc?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) to sell Chris Smalling for a total expenditure of €16m-€17m, and will strongly count on Smalling's desire to return to Italy [#mulive](https://twitter.com/hashtag/mulive?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) \[il tempo, [@Sport\_Witness](https://twitter.com/Sport_Witness?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)\]

> 15m for a player in serie a TOTS and still with plenty of years left as a CB is insulting imo with what other clubs expect us to pay

> Bournemouth get £40M for Nathan Ake and we can’t get above £20M for a Manchester United CB with over 300 apps? 😤

> Look all I know is Woodward gonna screw this up again. Chelsea and Arsenal making moves. So I would assume when we dont sign anyone were gonna say the market wasn’t right, aka we still don’t know how to negotiate, and we will drop to 5th-7th range and first round out of UCL

> Finally freeing up places and replenishing funds!\

> We are the worst selling club in the world. If we where to buy smalling from roma it would cost easily 60 mil but can’t sell him for more than 20
