Manchester United: Jamie Carragher criticises Fred during Brighton clash

Manchester United: Jamie Carragher criticises Fred during Brighton clash -Manchester United News

Jamie Carragher was left criticising Fred for his role in Brighton and Hove Albion’s second goal against Manchester United this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Poor start

Erik ten Hag’s Premier League reign as Red Devils manager got off to an inauspicious start, with his team finding themselves 2-0 down at half-time at Old Trafford.

Two goals from Pascal Gross put the Seagulls in control at the interval, before the hosts pulled a goal back in the second half after a mix-up between Robert Sanchez and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Latest: Fred criticised

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Carragher was critical of the reaction of Fred for Gross’ second goal, as he sneaked in ahead of the Brazilian at the back post to convert the rebound from a David de Gea save.

The former Liverpool manager hailed the Brighton player’s trickery earlier in the move but took aim at the Unietd midfielder, saying: “Absolutely fantastic – it started with a back-heel by their own corner flag.

“The reaction from Fred is a joke and Ten Hag needs to fix this right away… he has to get Ronaldo on now.

“These Manchester United players don’t know where these Brighton players are popping up and what is going on.”

The Verdict: Not good enough

Fred was simply not good enough and was rightfully substituted off for Cristiano Ronaldo early in the second half.

The midfielder lost out on all four of his duels, while he also made no tackles, was dribbled past twice and lost possession of the ball nine times in his 53 minutes on the pitch (SofaScore).

The Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor claimed that both Fred and Scott McTominay were ‘chasing shadows‘ in the middle of the park during the match, which perfectly summed up how the game was going for the 29-year-old, who is no stranger to criticism during his Old Trafford career.
