Manchester United: Choupo-Moting ‘might come into the frame’ for Red Devils in January

Manchester United: Choupo-Moting 'might come into the frame' for Red Devils in January - Follow up

Bayern Munich’s Eric Choupo-Moting could well fit the profile for Manchester United in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Red Devils in the hunt for a forward in January

Boss Erik ten Hag has admitted recently that the club will be looking to bring in a forward in January following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

In addition, Choupo-Moting has been linked with a move to the red side of Manchester back in November, with Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reporting that there was ‘serious interest’ in the Cameroonian attacker ahead of the January window.

The Latest: Jones claims player could be a ‘short-term’ solution

Speaking to GiveMeSport, reporter Dean Jones has claimed that Choupo-Moting ‘might come into the frame’, but it’s not necessarily a given they will follow through with their interest.

Furthermore, he added that the player could be signed purely as a ‘short-term’ solution to their striking options until the end of the season.

He said: “I don’t think he’s genuinely being lined up right now, but it is one of those names that might come into the frame.

“Realistically, if United are looking at a player to just solve a situation short-term, then you probably are looking at a player in their thirties. And to be honest, United don’t have many players in their thirties right now, so maybe that wouldn’t be the end of the world.”

The Verdict: Man United should explore other avenues

Many may remember the former Stoke City striker for his unexplainable miss for Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019, which was dubbed as the worst miss of all time.

The Cameroon forward has six goals to his name so far in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, while his current goal tally for the German side is the highest he has scored for any club he’s played for in his career, with 29 goals in 74 matches.

So it’s safe to say he’s improved his reputation drastically after his poor spell in the Premier League, where he only scored five goals in 32 matches across all competitions for Stoke.

Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United

MUFC fans, do you remember what year Cristiano Ronaldo signed the first time?

However, with the player being 33 years old, United should perhaps look to avoid a potential purchase. It’s likely that Choupo-Moting’s career will be winding down in the coming years and Ten Hag may be better off investing in a striker for the longer term.

Whether that striker is available in January and would be capable of making an instant impact is unknown, but it does feel as though a bid for the Bayern forward would be a gamble.
