Manchester United have been handed a potential boost to their chances of securing a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

The Lowdown: Man United's interest in Gakpo

The Red Devils were linked with the winger during the summer transfer window, along with the likes of Leeds United and Southampton.

Last month, Gakpo revealed that he was close to joining the Manchester club during that period and had even spoken with Erik Ten Hag about it.

It now appears as though the Old Trafford outfit have been handed a boost to their chances of finally securing a deal for the Dutchman, who has been described as an "electric" player by journalist Josh Bunting.

The Latest: PSV willing to sell Gakpo in January

According to a recent report from 90min, PSV are willing to let the 23-year-old exit the Eredivisie club during the upcoming January transfer window.

The report adds that PSV would ideally like to wait until the summer to let Gakpo leave, but having missed out on the Champions League group stage at the start of the campaign, they are unlikely to be able to resist a big-money offer at the start of next year.

The Verdict: Go for it

Having made 222 appearances for the Eindhoven club across their senior and youth teams , the winger - who will be looking to impress on the big stage for Netherlands during the upcoming World Cup in Qatar - has scored 82 goals and delivered 61 assists.

In 24 appearances across all competitions this season, the attacker has found the net 13 times, delivered 17 assists and had more shots at goal (49) and shots on target (24) than any other player in the Eredivisie, which highlights his clear attacking talent.

Bearing in mind how Cristiano Ronaldo has caused somewhat of a storm at United following a recent interview with TalkTV, which has prompted calls for him to be moved out of the club, securing a deal for Gakpo could be the perfect way for the Red Devils to forget about Ronaldo and focus on moving forward positively throughout the remainder of the season.
