Anthony Martial could be fit for Manchester United's upcoming Premier League clash with Newcastle United, journalist Samuel Luckhurst has reported.

The Lowdown: United host Magpies

Erik ten Hag's side picked up a hard-earned 2-1 win away to Everton in their last league outing and they face another potential testing fixture on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle make the trip to Old Trafford looking to spring something of a surprise, with Eddie Howe's men having European aspirations of their own this season.

Martial provided an assist for Antony against the Toffees but then had to leave the field early with a back injury, in what was the latest in a long line of setbacks for him. He missed the subsequent 1-0 win over Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Latest: Martial could be fit

According to The Manchester Evening News' Luckhurst on Twitter, however, the Frenchman could be fit for the Newcastle game:

"Martial could be back on Sunday."

The Verdict: Big boost

This would be a massive boost for Martial, who has missed so much football over the years and become an increasingly injury-prone figure for United, having once been described as 'world-class' by Robin van Persie.

If he is fit, it will be interesting to see if Ten Hag brings him back in straight away, or if he gives a start to Cristiano Ronaldo, who came off the bench to score the winner at Everton and also faced Nicosia.

Martial has more legs and movements these days, however, and therefore represents a more balanced, effective option in attack, but it remains to be seen how fit he will be.
